Book Review of The Fault In Our Stars By: John Green

I just finished the book called The Fault In Our Stars. I chose this book because a couple people have read this book in class. I am happy I read it. It is an amazing book. The main character is a girl name Hazel who has a terminal illness. As you can imagine the diagnosis was devastating to her. However, she wanted to live life to the fullest and make each day count. Unfortunately, she becomes extremely depressed. Her mother took her to the doctor and the doctor said that she should start attending cancer support groups once a week. She did as she was told and made many friends during this group. After going to a few of the support groups she said that it was boring and she did not want to go anymore. Her mother forced her to keep going. Hazel decided that was probably a good decision because she started to make many friends. One of her closest friends was Gus. Gus and she did everything together, and relied on each other. This was very important to her. It gave her a new perspective on things and made her situation more bearable. Sadly, Gus had a terrible ending. Hazel was very upset but she learned how to be a great friend to Gus.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I could not put it down. When this happens, I am so excited and know that I picked a perfect book. Although the book begins with the sad story of Hazel and her diagnosis, the book becomes more uplifting. I liked the character of Hazel because she is strong and nice and a truly believable character. John Green is able to make the story believable and the characters real. He is an amazing author. I highly recommend this book and hope you get it right away.

Part 2 Book Review of Trauma By: Dr James Cole

I had the chance to finish the book Trauma during February break. I found that I could not put it down. The events at the end of the book were particularly exciting. One chapter that was gruesome but very captivating is called Trauma and the Flesh-Eating Bacteria. In this chapter a woman falls into a dumpster. Her leg gets caught on to a nail that has bad bacteria on it. The nail gets deep into her body and nearly kills her. Dr. Cole saves her life by injecting a vaccination that fights off all bad bacteria. She survives but has an amputated foot. It is amazing to me how a team of doctors can save a person's life. Dr. Cole describes this incident in great detail and conveys to the reader his surprise in being able to help and save her life. I like the detail that he gives because it makes it more lively and real. Another chapter that was very interesting is called Broken Mind and Damaged Bodies. This chapter was about a couple who both had a disease called dementia. They both were dedicated to each other. He talks about their relationship and their struggles as a couple.
He is one of the top general surgeons in the world. People from all over come to Illinois for his help. One thing that I would of added to the book would have been more photographs. I also wish they were in color. I am glad that I finished this book on a positive note. I was as excited about the book at the beginning as I was in the end. Non-fiction books are exciting because they can be current events. I recommend this book if you don't mind gruesome details at times. I think it is fun to be exposed to all types of writing.
